Roy a barátom.
A kölcsönös rokonszenv azonban rögtön megvolt.
I know my English in the following paragraphs is far from perfect but I hope that does not have a real effect on its contect. If sg is unclear for my native English readers just ask 🙂
Roy is my friend. First of the kiwis who is really my friend.
Let’s see how we met: we live in the same village though are far from being neighbours. Roy and Christine (his wife) are Jehova’s Witnesses, Christine regularly visits people in the village, directly ringing into houses. That’s how she met Gabi. She was welcome because no matter who you meet here it’s always a good way to speak English and get involved into community life.
I think we Hungarians have a kind of reluctancz against this kind of religion agents and maybe not without any basis. Though the latter is based only my own experience and it’s not a fact but only an opinion. In Hungary these agents are often quite intrusive or the very opposite when they are so shy that the most they do is saying a few words with eyes fixed downwards then handling over the actual Watchtower and they are off…
It’s different here. Christine has been very friendly and helpful from the beginning, she enjoyed the tea masterpieces that are trademarks of Gabi’s genius and they always have a pleasant conversation about everything on one hand and about the Bible on the other.
These conversation had been going on for a while once or twice a week when it came up if I was interested so Christine would visit us during a weekend with his husband, Roy. Before that happened we visited them when having a walk with Barni but only Christine was home. We had a good chat (and they have 2 funny dogs so Barni also really enjoyed being there!).
It’s quite difficult speaking about such things not on your native language and because I didn’t know too much about the Witnesses, neither about the organization nor about its members, the first conversation was a bit go-as-you-please without any real frame. But the mutual sympathy was recognized instantly.
Since then Roy has visited us more or less regularly on every Sunday afternoon for a religional chat. We use a small book as a guide that serves as a frame for the conversations. This book is occasionally too simple but since it’s written to be understood by the widest audiance it’s fair enough. For me at least 1 new question always arises about every topic and then we talked about those almost more than anything else.
I don’t say that I accept everyting as it is in that small book (or even in the Bible) but I strive to be as naive (means: without prejudice) as possible. And it’s a pleasure that the situation is the same on Roy’s side as well: we don’t really want to persuade the other aggressively, we just chat. There is quite much common in our approach towards the world but many differences at the same time. However since only the viewpoints differ not the world actually, we speak about the same thing! 😉
So why is it credible for me here in Wainuiomata when it wasn’t at all in Hungary? It’s because of the people who represent it. For me the credibility does not come from the Scriptures but a bit vica versa: the personality, helpfulness, generosity and friendliness of these two persons – these are the things that confirm that if someone lives with all his/her heart as a Witness then he/she is a good person. I don’t think it’s the only path towards salvation but I can declare that this road leads to the proper destination.
We even visited a ccuple of times the Sunday meetings in the temple where we could hear very interesting and thoughtful presentations but we haven’t become regular guests.
I still feel anthroposophy the closest to me and I presume I turn even more towards Rudolf Steiner in the future but I intend to go in with the Witnesses’ study as I’ve been doing it in the last months.
Due to the growing number (and even better quality) of meetings, visits, conversations recently, the friendship between the two families (though Gabi meets Christine much more often while I do the same with Roy) is getting stronger and more pleasant every time: the girls have been in the cinema together, I usually carpool with Roy in the mornings from Wainui to Lower Hutt (which is good because bus services are quite unreliable during morning hours but on the other hand it’s much better that we can have a chat no matter it’s less than 15 minutes, it’s worth it!)
Apart from all these Roy gave Bence an unforgettable experience (I hope my son will remember it – if not we can help him with the photo :)) as you can see it in the picture (above). And a little later that day he was taken for a short ride on a dirtbike, too!
The fact that the conversations with them were based initially on the field of religion and life-philosophy has helped a lot that the usual 1st phase of making friends was skipped. We didn’t need a period to reach the level where we can discuss the innermost thoughts (I don’t refer to emotions but viewpoints about World, God, Life, Purpose of life, etc.). At least it hasn’t really happened to me that e.g. I began to chat with the inspector on the train about such things.
So there was no such obstacle, we could talk at the beginning about anything that came up and this gave us an unmissable opportunity (which we have managed to fulfill) to form a true friendship. Many people say that it’s easy to be buddies with kiwis but they are superficial and it’s quite difficult to go beyond a certain level. This is generally true about everyone I think (I didn’t make real friends from one day to another in Hungary) but on the other hand after knowing Roy for a couple of month I feel I can say: I know a kiwi who is my true friend.
